A FEW WORDS ABOUT PLANE GEOMETRY

Geometry is a very ancient science.  The name comes from 'geo measure' since geometry was originally about measuring the fields for farms.  The science of geometry was developed by many ancient cultures, Egyptian, Chinese and above all Greek.  The famous book, The Elements, written by Euclid is still the basis of plane geometry.  Click this link to learn  more about EUCLID

Geometry is also a study of mathematical logic.  Certain facts are assumed to be true.  These are called
axioms or postulates.  Sometimes facts are simply definitions such as "a point is an entity on a plane having no dimensions, only a location"  Other statements called theorems are proven using axioms and postulates.  To understand geometry it is neccessary to understand its basic definitions, axioms and theorems.

BASIC TERMS, a web site about basic geometric terms.  Lines and points are fundamental entities in geometry but nearly everything else is a polygon.  A little further on we will take up circles, squares and triangles.  They are all polygons but there are many other kinds of polygons.  Visit  POLYGONS to learn more about the many kinds of polygons.  Ready for circles, squares and triangles?  Click here.
