LAYERS OF THE EARTH
(CS-6 science.1b)
As the earth cooled from its origanal totally molten state, it settled into layers. The lighter layers floated on top of the heavier layers. Want to learn more about the earth's layers? Here is a Nasa web site which you can visit to learn more.
What are the layers of the earth? The outermost layer is called the lithosphere . Litho means rock.

The Grand Canyon is a good example of the lithosphere.
Visit this web site for an in depth discussion of the lithosphere.
The next layer in is called the mantle. It is hot and transfers its heat around the earth by convection.

Visit this site for a discussion of the earth's mantle.
At the center of the earth is a dense metallic core.

The core is solid because the pressure is so high there that the metals which compose the core cannot melt. Click here to learn more about the earth's inner core.
