In his support of the compromise of 1850, Daniel Webster aligned himself with Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas in an attempt to prevent the breakup of the Union. On March 7th 1850, Webster gave one of his most famous speeches, characterizing himself "not as a Massachusetts man, nor as a Northern man but as an American..." Webster was a great advocate of preserving the union. His southern opponent was equally dedicated to preserving states rights including the right to seceed from the union. That opponent was John C.
